Introduction
The player takes on the role of Lloyd Artiliarias Devlin the knight-commander of a group called the Winged-Sun. It begins with Lloyd's forces overwhelming the country of Lagao and declaring rule over their lands. It then moves to a bedroom scene between Lloyd and his wife Eva, this introduces the relationship of the two. During the night the village people including Lloyd and Eva are taken away by Webbats an amalgamation of bats and spiders. These creatures have come into their world from the underworld called Dystalia. The entrance has been sealed for approximately 500 years since the death of “The ancient king” but something has fractured a breach between the two worlds.

Dystalia is a land home to many different races of humanoid including; Elves, Demons, Fairies, Orcs, Sirens and Beast men. Prior to escaping Lloyd meets Leyley, an elf with a love of violence, and Sancho, a punk who uses this opportunity to try and reform his character. Lloyd must then decide who he wishes to retain as his follower as the other is killed for the time being. After being devoured by the “Abyssal maw” a name given to the enormous creature that dwells within the mountain between the two worlds, Lloyd finds himself in the small town of Door, populated with a mixture of different species. As dialogue progresses Lloyd discovers the existence of “Spawn points” places where the dead are resurrected provided they still have the will to live.

The culture that exists in Dystalia is that humans are fed to demons once a week as soon as they become adults. This is not compulsory but those who agree are rewarded with large payments for their efforts. This has created a society of humans specialising in satisfying the demon's taste buds. Some families are renowned for their sweetness, others savoury and so on. Learning that his wife had met her fate here and that she has gone to negotiate with the demon king Edleforth, Lloyd begins his quest to rescue his wife and to destroy the harmonious culture that, to him, seems so vile.
Aspects of history
The ancient king (Alexander Artiliarias Devlin)
Alexander Artiliarias Devlin is Lloyd's great (*6) grandfather on his paternal side. the name Artiliarias has been passed down through every generation of Devlin man since before even Alexander's time. The Devlin family have been warriors for as long as people engaged in the sport of war. Alexander was no exception to this endeavour, in fact, he was naturally gifted in both the physical and tactical arts. Having married his wife Hailey on his twenty-second birthday, Alexander had tried to settle down to a position as town guard commander. A prestigious title for one so young but one he had already earned through many battles against the neighbouring country of Amta (a country long since wiped from history). Yet fate always has plans for those of great ambition and it was a strange encounter that Alexander first happened into the world of Dystalia. Dystalia, the prison that would cage him for thirty years. On hearing reports of people going missing in the mountainside village of Wheatfield, Alexander set off from his home in neighbouring Dancaster to aid the guards in their search. Stumbling through the mountainside caverns, he became victim to the Maw's insatiable hunger. Upon landing in Dystalia Alexander found before him a world of warring tribes; The Demons, Orcs, Elves, Fairy and Siren clans had never found a peaceful coexistence. Humans, what little there were, had been nothing more than a destitute populace of underlings acting as slaves or foot soldiers.
It was not long before he had fallen into the hands of an elven tribe ruled by their fearless queen Denadra. Having yet found no recourse against magical attacks, Alexander had no choice but to serve under the queen's iron will. In time, however, he again distinguished himself in battle. Despite having no knowledge of magic, Alexander was able to contend with all other races on an equal footing. his weapon, now known as the Devlin mythic blade, was forged by the elves when they recognised the potential he had for combat. Upon seeing the havoc he wrought upon his enemies with the blade it was not long before the elves had tailored him with the finest armours and schooled him in the ways of magic. Their mistake had been to think him still a slave. Within the year of his first spell, Alexander had rallied the humans against the Elven tribe and forced, by submission, a pact. One that came with the hand of Denadra.
